Cops arrest gang boss after double shooting

KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 — It was a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
An underworld chieftain known as Don Bond, who oversees gang activities in Rawang, Selayang and Batu Caves, has found himself behind bars.
Greed led him to a budget hotel in Batu Caves on Tuesday, where he became involved in the repossession of a car that turned dramatic, with a high-speed chase and shooting which left two men injured and the gangster himself escaping by the skin of his teeth.
Police launched a series of raids at about 3am yesterday and Don was arrested in an ambush at an undisclosed location here.
Don, in his late 30s, dishonourably discharged from the police force, is now under remand.
This is reportedly the first time Don has seen the inside of a jail despite numerous extortion, bribery and gang-related reports lodged against him.
Sources told Malay Mail police had their break when they seized a yellow Proton Satria with bloodied interior and exterior used by one of the victims of the shooting.
The vehicle was found to be one of several used by Don, who fled immediately after the shooting.
Police established that a Suzuki Swift found nearby was used by the second victim. About a kilometre away, police found a Volkswagen Scirocco left abandoned after one of its tyres was blown out.
Yesterday, based on accounts from witnesses, police put together events that took place at a traffic light junction beneath the MRR II overpass near Sunway Batu Caves, and what led to it.
With the vehicles seized, police launched a manhunt for a gang of robbers, at least one of whom was armed with a gun.
The Volkswagen was reported stolen several months ago in Cheras by two men, one armed with a gun.
Witnesses said the three vehicles  came to a halt at the junction, with the Volkswagen in front.
A fourth car — a Japanese model —screeched to a halt behind the Proton. Two men, one brandishing a gun, jumped out and rushed towards the Proton.
Each opened the doors from either side with one opening fire into the vehicle.
They then did the same with the Swift. But before they could proceed to the Volkswagen, the driver sped off.
The duo returned to their car and gave chase.
By then, curious onlookers had gathered at the scene, while some passers-by rushed to the nearby Batu Caves police station to alert police.
The incident had unfolded earlier in the day, when several car repossessors turned up at a budget hotel where they wanted to repossess the Volkswagen.
They contacted Don to seek his assistance to carry out the repossession.
Don arrived shortly after and was discussing the matter with the repossessors, when an unidentified man walked up to the Volkswagen and removed a bag from the boot.
Don then reportedly identified himself as a policeman and escorted the man into the hotel lobby where they continued the discussion.
A short while later, Don walked out and drove off in the Volkswagen while two others followed in the Proton and Swift respectively.
They then drove towards Sunway Batu Caves where they stopped at a traffic light intersection, where the attack took place.
