KUALA LUMPUR: The chairman of an anti-crime NGO was arrested on Wednesday night after allegedly receiving cash from an illegal gambling operator.
The suspect, a Datuk in his 30s, was picked up at the Nilai toll plaza.
It is learnt that a team from Bukit Aman Crime Investigation Department arrested the suspect.
Sources revealed that the suspect allegedly extorted the gambling operator and threatened to expose the latter’s illegal activity on social media.
The chairman had allegedly threatened to expose the gambling operation unless the operator fork out RM25,000 of "protection" money.
Tired of the extortion, the operator reported the matter to the police.
It is learnt that the operator had handed over the cash to the chairman at the Nilai toll plaza at about 10.50pm on Wednesday.
Shortly after that, a team of policemen from the Bukit Aman CID D7 Division swooped in and arrested the chairman and his driver.
