KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — Umno today sacked its former deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah mentri besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir for breaching party regulations due to their involvement with the opposition.

Former vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, on the other hand, has been suspended.

The announcement was made by Umno president and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak at the party’s headquarters here.

“The supreme council had decided unanimously to sack Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir for indiscipline.

“Especially since they were on the stump with the opposition and in their speeches attacked the party and its leadership,” Najib told reporters after chairing the party’s supreme council meeting.

“That is a very big offence,” he added.

Najib also announced that the government will cancel all funding to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Perdana Peace Foundation, including remuneration to all of its staff.

“This is because the foundation is used as a base to plot the toppling of the government through unconstitutional and illegal means.

“That means all staffs will be given the (termination of employment) notice,” he said.

The suggestion was made by Umno Youth, the party president added.

Muhyiddin and Mukhriz are both part of a campaign to oust Najib led by Dr Mahathir, who recently joined Pakatan Harapan’s campaign at the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections.

Umno won in both contests, defeating PAS and its splinter group Amanah with stronger majorities.
