SUBANG JAYA: It doesn't matter what justification you have, but taking the law into your own hands is a big no-no, say police.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said police would take action against blogger Papagomo, who made headlines recently for allegedly assaulting a man whom he concluded had sexually harassed his sisters and her friends.
Papagomo, whose real name is Wan Azri Wan Deris, was seen slapping, punching and kicking a man, believed to be a foreign worker, in a four-minute video clip which has received over a million views on Facebook.
Wan Azri claimed that the foreign worker had sexually harassed two of his younger sisters and two of their friends.Noor Rashid said whether or not a report had been lodged over the incident, he viewed the case as undermining the authority of the police and said action should be taken against Wan Azri.
"I haven't seen it (the video). But whether foreigners or locals, we are all subject to the law. If we beat anyone, if you bring harm to a person, you have done wrong and we will take action," he said.
"We can't have people simply beating others when they like. They have to follow the law. They have to be taught a lesson," he said.
Wan Azri reportedly told the man's supervisor that he would assault the foreign worker if he did not go away.
He penned a statement on social media defending his actions, which received praise from Netizens.
He said his sisters and their two friends were able to identify the perpetrator who harassed them and he was doing "what an elder brother is supposed to do".
"It is not that I don't believe in the police, but it takes a long time to bring the foreign workers to the station and to get justice.
"It is worse if the worker runs back to his country and it becomes an NFA (No Further Action) case.
"I, as a brother, took my own action, which to me is a lesson that needs to be given to those who sexually harass others," he had said in his post.
