19-year-old returning from Syria arrested at KLIA

The former student from a college in Cairo, Egypt, was returning through Turkey and is suspected of being a recruit of Jund al Aqsa, an Al-Qaeda-linked group actively fighting in Aleppo, Syria.
"Police believe he was recruited to join the Syrian terrorist group after interacting with a member on Facebook in the middle of last year.
"In September last year, the terrorists had organised for him to enter Syria via Turkey," Khalid said in a statement.
Khalid said the suspect was believed to have participated in over 100 militant operations with Jund al Aqsa, after undergoing a month of training in several terrorist camps in Hamar and Idlib, Syria.
"He was exposed to handle AK47, Rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), machine guns, hand grenades and tank firearms during training."
The youth, who was arrested under Act 574 of the Penal Code, is being investigated under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).
The latest arrest brings the number of Malaysians arrested for suspicion of joining terrorist groups in Syria to eight, two of whom were sentenced. – December 11, 2015.
