Tengku Razaleigh said former prime minister Dr Mahathir, who was one of Najib’s critics within Umno, had summoned him for a meeting.
"I recently met Dr Mahathir, he invited me. I meet everyone," he told reporters at a Hari Raya open house in Bukit Jalil.
But Tengku Razaleigh, also known as Ku Li, refused to divulge the details of the meeting, saying it was personal.
"I don't want to interfere too much. We want everything to be calm, the situation to be good, and to avoid any confusion among the pulic while the economy is having problems.
"We shouldn't add any more problems to the people," he said.
He said he had also met Najib twice before Hari Raya.
"He invited me to give my views, my advice, and I gave my advice to him. I don't think I need to tell you (what we discussed)."
News portal Asia Sentinel said on Wednesday that Ku Li had met with Dr Mahathir to form a unity government to remove Najib.
However, Ku Li said today he still supported Najib, and pointed to the fact that he was still a Barisan Nasional (BN) backbencher.
He said his primary concern was that Umno operated in accordance with the federal constitution.
He said all leaders must prove to the public that they could be trusted.
"We cannot do anything out of the ordinary. That will raise questions. That is not good for the party," he said. – August 15, 2015.
