KUALA LUMPUR: At 35,000ft, even the best roasted chicken can taste like rubber when the tastebuds go numb.

AirAsia has worked hard to overcome that problem. The airline has come up with a brand new menu that has chicken that tastes like a million bucks up in the air.

AirAsia’s new menu, “Santan”, aims to re-create the restaurant experience for travellers with new meals like nasi dagang chicken curry with dodol, teriyaki chicken rice cake, smoked chicken pizza sandwich, chicken satay wrap and vegetable pasta with roast chicken.

AirAsia group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said the airline aimed to tell the world that it could serve food that was as good as those travellers could get at good restaurants.

“I was flying back from Ho Chi Minh yesterday and the nasi dagang I was served tasted superb.

“Food is a major part of our business, and this revamp is designed to give people not only the lowest fares, but the best quality food which is value for their money,” he said at the launch of “Santan” here yesterday.

Apart from the main meals, snacks and desserts like cookie bars and chocolate have also been added to the menu, along with a separate kids meal to appease young travellers.

The airline is not content with stopping at merely serving restaurant quality Malaysian and continental food, as Fernandes indicated that the next step would be to regionalise the menu.

“We will be having foods like green curry, Vietnamese noodles and pad thai to go with the Malaysian food in future, so we can have a range of food that reflects Asean.

“Also, the people making the Asean foods are from the specific countries, so nothing will be watered down.

“Some companies think they need to adjust the flavours of certain foods, but I don’t think we need to do that for our food,” he added.

Fernandes also noted that while the new menu will be served in AirAsia and AirAsia X here from now on, “Santan” will be the inflight menu across the board for the entire AirAsia group by October.

Travellers are encouraged to pre-book their meals to save up to 20% as opposed to buying their meals on board, via the “Manage My Booking” option on www.airasia.com
