#MIC Re-election preparations will go on with interim CWC says Deputy President

Subra: Re-election preparations will go on with interim CWC

KUALA LUMPUR: The MIC interim central working committee (CWC) will go on with preparations for the re-election although several party leaders have taken the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to court.
Party deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said it was unfortunate that the party president had not attended any of the three meetings already held by the interim committee, which comprises the CWC elected in 2009.
“We are using the ambit of the CWC to appoint the election committee. And have asked the committee to start working on conducting the re-election.
“Until the court makes any decision which affects us, we will carry on,” he told a media briefing here yesterday.
On Monday, MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel and three party leaders filed an application for judicial review proceedings against the RoS over its directive for the party to hold fresh elections.
The three others are vice-presidents Datuk S. Sothinathan and Datuk S. Balakrishnan, and former secretary-general A. Prakash Rao.
In the suit filed on Feb 24, they are seeking a declaration that matters related to a political party’s elections were governed by the party’s constitution and could not be based on the opinion of the RoS.
Dr Subramaniam said it was “confusing” that Palanivel was taking RoS to court but also saying he would hold the re-elections.
When contacted, party treasurer general Datuk S. Murugesan said Palanivel had always stated he would conduct the re-elections.
“They are challenging the RoS directive that stripped the president of his power,” he said.
