KUALA LUMPUR: City police here made their biggest drug bust so far this year, with the crippling of a ganja distribution ring and over 37kg of marijuana seized.
Deputy city police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Law Hong Soon said the drug ring's downfall began on March 11, when Setapak police pulled over a man they were suspicious of for riding a "luxury motorcycle".
Checks on the 41-year-old used motorcycle parts seller found that he was carrying about one kilogram of compact dried leaves, which were found to be ganja.
"He was taken in for questioning and then later the suspect directed police to a rented house in Jalan Umbun, where we found packages of the drugs amounting to 37.6kg, worth RM94,000," he said.
DCP Law said police confiscated 27 large rectangular packages, wrapped in tape and plastic, each containing about 1kg of ganja. They also seized three smaller packages of the drug in the house.
He said police were hot on the heels of the suspect's other accomplice who were in on the drug distribution operation, which had been around for about five-months.
"The ganja seized were found to have originated from a northern state here and was to be sold to locals.
"I estimate that the amount seized could have been sold to over 19,000 drug addicts. They may all be in the city alone," he said.
The suspect, who is a widowed father of three, has been remanded until March 18 and faces the death sentence if convicted under Section 117 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
DCP Law said the man has had two previous criminal records.
