Datuk Seri Najib Razak has contracted the E. coli infection, the Prime Minister's Office said today.
In a Twitter posting, it said the prime minister was infected with the bacteria during his many tours to flood-hit areas last week.
The statement said Najib has been advised to rest, and will return to work as soon as possible.
Najib in response said he would monitor the flood situation from his home.
E. coli is abbreviated from Escherichia coli, and is a bacteria normally found in the intestines.
It is usually transmitted by eating bacteria-infected food or swallowing contaminated water.
Most types of E. coli are harmless, and some can cause diarrhea. In its worst type, such as E. coli O157:H7, it can cause kidney failure and even death, with children being the most vulnerable. – January 5, 2015.
