PETALING JAYA: An honest mistake sent the car of a 70-year-old man crashing into a bank in Damansara Uptown on Sunday evening, shattering glass panels before hitting a wall next to the bank’s ATMs.
Petaling Jaya traffic police chief Deputy Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said that the man, a retired army officer, had just finished making a transaction at the CIMB bank along Jalan SS 21/35 at about 7.30pm.
The man got into his Perodua Kelisa, which was parked right in front of the bank, and intended to reverse and drive off.
“However, he didn’t realise that he had put the car in drive and thought he was pressing the brake when he had actually hit the accelerator,” DSP Mohamad Roy said.
The mistake sent the car zooming up the sidewalk and through the glass panels of the bank.
The car came to a stop after hitting a wall at the back of the bank.
“There was no one in the bank at the time and there was no damage to the ATMs. He only hit a wooden booth that was next to the glass panels.
“The bank management lodged a report on Monday morning and we have decided to just issue a summons against the man.
“It was a sincere mistake,” DSP Mohamad Roy said.
