SRI AMAN (Sarawak): A total of RM126.4 million has been spent to help 44,027 single mothers with schoolgoing children throughout the country last year, said Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim.
She said the amount increased by RM5.2 million compared to the previous year of which RM121.2 million was disbursed to help 41,179 single mothers.
Rohani also said a total of RM40.05 million was disbursed last year to help 17,834 poor single-parent families.
"The allocation is to ensure single mothers are always given assistance and their future is guaranteed," she told reporters after handing over 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) 3.0 for the Batang Lupar Parliamentary constituency here today.
A total of 5,103 people have registered for the first phase of BR1M 3.0 in the constituency.
Rohani, who is also the member of parliament for Batang Lupar, said a Caring Complex under the one-stop centre concept, and the first in the country, would operate in Batang Lupar soon.
She said the two-storey complex would house all the offices of the ministry's agencies, dealing with welfare-related matters, in particular.
Rohani said the complex with 32 rooms would also provide facilities for disabled people to be self-reliant and that it would serve as a pilot project, before being implemented in other states. -- BERNAMA
