Fiera Syafieqa Shamsudin, 20, and Amir Hassan Bakri, 26, appeared calm when the charge was read to them before Magistrate Fairuz Abidah Ismail.
However, no pleas were recorded.
Fiera Syafiqa and Amir Hassan, from Kampung Sungai Pulai and Kampung Sri Perkasa in Hutan Melintang here respectively, were charged together with causing the death of her two and a half-year-old daughter, Nur Ain Ariana Abdullah, in an unnumbered house at Kampung Sri Perkasa at 4.30 pm on March 3.
The charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code provides a death penalty upon conviction.
The court set April 9 for remention.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Hidayah Ismail prosecuted, while the couple was not represented.
On March 5, Nur Ain Ariana was reported to be found in critical condition with severe bruises and wounds, believed to be abused by her mother and her boyfriend.
The girl succumbed to her injuries at the intensive care unit of Sungai Buloh Hospital last Friday.
