IPOH: A two-year-old girl from Hutan Melintang, about 116km from here, has gone into a coma while a four-month-old girl here has been admitted into intensive care after suffering from what doctors called “shaken baby syndrome”. Both are alleged victims of child abuse.
Hilir Perak district police chief Asst Commisioner Goh Kok Liang said the 20-year-old mother of little Nur Ain Ariana Abdullah had rushed the toddler to the Sabak Bernam Hospital from their home in Kampung Seri Perkasa, Hutan Melintang, at about 5pm on Monday.
The child was then transferred to the Sungai Buloh Hospital in Selangor as her case was deemed critical.
Medical checks on the toddler found bruises and scratch marks all over her body and a swell on the left temple.
Doctors said there was internal bleeding in the head.
ACP Goh said the mother and her 26-year-old boyfriend had been remanded for an extended four days to help in the investigations, under Section 3 (1) of the Child Act 2001.
In the other case, a four-month-old baby from Simpang Pulai, near here, is being kept under observation at the child intensive care unit of the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here after a CT scan showed haemorrhaging in her brain.
Police recorded a statement from a 30-year-old woman, said to be the child’s nanny.
Her parents sent the infant to the hospital at about 6pm on Wednesday.
Doctors who carried out the scan lodged a report at the hospital police beat yesterday.
Initial reports showed that the baby suffered “shaken baby syndrome”. However, she is reported to be in a stable condition.
Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong said they were investigating the matter. No arrest had been made so far.
