    A mentally unstable teenager slipped into the driver's seat of a family car at a rest stop and sped off with it, with the family still in the passenger seat.

    A nine-month-old baby is in a coma following a terror ride by a mentally unstable teenager who tried to carjack two vehicles along the East Coast Highway here.

    It All Started When A 17-Year-Old Boy Hijacked The Family's Car When They Stopped At A Rest Area

    In the 6pm incident the family was on their way to Kuala Lumpur from Kelantan in an MPV; two of the family members are attached with the police force.


    They then stopped at the Bukit Besi-Ajil rest area of the East Coast Highway, where two of them decided to use the restroom. Out of nowhere, the 17-year-old suspect got into the car and sped off with three people still inside.

    Terengganu police chief Datuk Jamshah Mustapa said the 17-year-old, a school dropout from Kemaman, had driven off a Grand Livina multi-purpose vehicle with a couple and their baby still inside the car.
    While the in-laws went to the restroom, the boy suddenly got into the car and drove off with the couple and their baby. However, the car soon skidded out of control before crashing into another vehicle and a lorry.

    “Ketika dalam perjalanan pulang ke Kuala Lumpur selepas pengebumian nenek yang meninggal dunia di Tumpat, Kelantan, kereta saya dipandu adik ipar dengan isterinya duduk di depan. “Ketika singgah di R&R Ajil, adik ipar dan isterinya ke tandas sebelum secara tiba-tiba remaja itu menceroboh masuk dan memecut kereta kami menghala ke arah Kuantan,” katanya.


    “Saya tidak sangka dia berani masuk ketika kami ada dalam kereta dan kemudian memecut sehingga terbabit kemalangan,” kata Abdul Pirhat Karim, 35, mengimbas kejadian kenderaan pelbagai guna (MPV) Grand Livina, miliknya dilarikan seorang remaja, petang kelmarin.


    Katanya, sepanjang perjalanan beliau berusaha memujuk remaja terbabit supaya tidak melakukan sesuatu yang membahayakan isteri dan bayinya. “Remaja itu tidak peduli, menyebabkan saya bergelut dengannya sebelum hilang kawalan dan terbabit kemalangan dengan sebuah kereta dan lori ketika tiba berhampiran Ladang Gajah Mati,” katanya.



    When The Car Crashed, The Baby And His Father Was Thrown Out Of The Vehicle On Impact


    “The vehicle skidded out of control before crashing into a Proton Waja car and a lorry. The baby and his father were thrown out in the impact,” Terengganu police chief Datuk Jamshah Mustapa said.


    The baby, he said, lapsed into a coma while the mother, Che Mastura Che Awang, 31, sustained a broken rib and the father, Abdul Pirhat Karim, 34, a fractured right shoulder.



    The Suspect Then Carjacked A MyVi By Pretending To Ask For Help Along The Highway

    After the accident at KM88 of Jalan Jerangau-Jabor near Ladang Gajah Mati, the unarmed suspect from Kemaman stopped a Perodua Myvi which was heading to Kuala Terengganu from Kuantan, he said.




    Jamshah said the teenager pretended to ask for help but as soon the driver got out of the car, he drove off with its four passengers still inside.

    “The car was later found with the teenager inside in Kampung Batu Rakit at about 7pm. All the passengers were unharmed.

    Not long afterwards, police managed to intercept the suspect infront of a mosque in Batu Rakit.

    The suspect, who tested negative for drugs, has been remanded and will be referred to a psychiatrist, he said.
    Police Believe The Suspect's Motive Was Not To Steal The Cars

    “Initial investigations showed that the boy’s motive was not to steal the cars. He is a school dropout and we believe that he is mentally unstable,” he said.





    The Victims Are Currently Being Treated At The Dungun Hospital

    The victims including the baby's mother Che Mastura Che Awang, 31, and father Abdul Pirhat Karim, 34, are being treated at the Dungun Hospital.
