Actress Zahida Rafik sued by ex-driver for defamation
KUALA LUMPUR: A former personal driver of actress Zahida Rafik has sued her for allegedly defaming him in a Malay tabloid over the loss of RM200,000.
Noor Azman Azemi, 39, filed the suit through the firm Messrs Daim & Gamany at the High Court registry here Wednesday.
The plaintiff was present during the filing with his aunt Tengku Intan Tengku Abdul Hamid, better known as Dayangku Intan (popular singer in the 1980s), and lawyer Latheefa Koya.
In his statement of claim, Noor Azman said the actress, who acted in Anak Mami The Movie, had wrongfully and with bad intention given defamatory statements in an article published in the tabloid on March 3, where she had allegedly accused him of running away with the money after he was ordered to deposit it in her bank account.
The plaintiff claimed Zahida's statements had portrayed him as not trustworthy, a thief and a criminal, and gave him a bad reputation, jeapordising his chances of getting jobs.
He said he was remanded by the police for four days after Zahida, 38, lodged a report against him on the loss.
The plaintiff sought an injunction to prevent the defendant or her agents from repeating the defamatory statements.
He also sought general, aggravated and exemplary damages as well as costs and other reliefs deemed fit by the court.
