Aussie lawyer killed in brawl

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 6, 2013): Just a day after he arrived here for a holiday, an Australian lawyer was killed in a pub brawl on Jalan Doraisamy here late on Friday.
Bhishma Digpaul (pix), 38, who was alone, died of stab wounds after he was set upon by five local men in an altercation over a woman at about 4am.
Police investigations revealed Digpaul, who was of Mauritian origin and held dual citizenship, was allegedly intoxicated when he was accused of accosting a woman at the pub.
This angered the woman's boyfriend who, together with his friends, confronted the foreigner. A heated argument ensued before Digpaul was stabbed in his back.
Dang Wangi police chief ACP Zainuddin Ahmad said a man in his late 20's was detained to assist in investigations.
He said members of the public who spotted Digpaul lying in a pool of blood on the roadside near Sheraton Hotel called for an ambulance.
He was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital and died five hours later.
Zainuddin said Digpaul suffered eight stab wounds on his back caused by a sharp object that punctured his lungs.
In another unrelated case, a 64-year-old newspaper vendor suffered injuries after he fell into a monsoon drain when he was chased by two men suspected to be robbers on Jalan Sibu, Taman Wahyu here today.
The vendor had gone to pick up a stack of newspapers for delivery at about 4am when he spotted two men on a motorcycle.
Kuala Lumpur police CID chief SAC Datuk Ku Chin Wah said the vendor evaded the men by returning home, but was pursued by the duo when he went to work at 7am.
"He sped off upon noticing the duo but when he reached a dead-end, he got off his motorcycle and fled on foot. In his haste to escape, he jumped over a drain but fell into it and injured himself," said Ku, who urged witnesses in both cases to contact the city police hotline at 03-2115 9999.
