KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 -- The Digital Parliament, organised by three youth bodies; Challenger Malaysia, Undi18 and Liga Rakyat Demokratik, has now received 5,775 applicants nationwide, to participate in the first online sitting, to be held on July 4 and 5.
Digital Parliament secretariat Alicia Nicholle said, out of the applications, 1,327 were applications to become representatives, 2,742 named candidates as representatives and 1,706 applied to become observers.
“The application is opened to youth, aged 15 to 35 years old, and we found out that 63.1 per cent are students including 320 are under 18 years old.
“Meanwhile, in term of ethnic, 68 per cent are Malay, Chinese (10.2 per cent), Indian (8.2) and other categories (13.6),” she said in an online press conference today.
Alicia hoped more women would apply to participate in the conference, at least 30 per cent, as compared to only 19 per cent applications so far from the group.
Digital Parliament Technical leader Eshaan Menon hoped the two-day sitting would produce a document and online Parliament proceeding procedure to be handed over to the Prime Minister’s office, Dewan Rakyat Speaker’s office, Dewan Negara Speaker’s office and all political party heads, to be looked into.
“Among our objectives is to encourage the Parliament of Malaysia to continue sitting online, even when the country is facing the COVID-19 outbreak,’’ he added.
