GEORGE TOWN: A woman who claims that radiation from a telecommunications tower near her home caused a family member to die of cancer decided to gatecrash a press conference held by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad last week to plead her case.

The woman, in her 40s, told Dzulkefly that health authorities had ignored her complaints over the telco tower in Taman Desa Murni, Sungai Dua, Butterworth.

A video clip of the incident has been making the rounds on social media. It shows the woman demanding answers from Dzulkefly about why health authorities never responded to her complaints.

“Don’t touch me. I was allowed to get in by the bodyguards,” the woman told a police officer who tried to stop her from talking during a joint press conference by Dzulkefly and Lim at a gotong-royong event in Butterworth on Sept 15.

“I voted in these two ministers and it is hard to meet them. I chose you and this is what you do to me,” the woman was heard saying.

Dzulkefly was seen appealing to the woman to allow the press to ask questions, and promising to meet her in person later.

It is learnt that the woman had lost a family member to cancer, which she said was caused by the telco tower.

A source said the woman’s brother had attempted suicide following the death in the family.

The woman alleged that her complaints about the telco tower to local and state authorities were ignored, and that she was told to wait five months.

In June, Malaysian Nuclear Agency chief Mohd Abdul Wahap Yusof said radio frequency waves from telco towers posed no health hazards.

He said global research in the last 10 years found no conclusive evidence that radio frequency waves from telco towers could cause cancer.
