GEORGE TOWN: Hundreds of fans were disappointed after two of the biggest names in the Mandopop industry – David Tao and Shin – did not show up for the concert at the Setia SPICE Arena.

Apparently, the concert was cancelled after the organiser had failed to settle the balance of the appearance fees for the duo on Saturday (Sept 21).

The fans had earlier gone into the arena for the concert scheduled for 8pm, but were only informed about the cancellation via a giant screen at the stage at 9.35pm.

Penang Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin (pic) said the event was neither supported nor endorsed by the state government.

He demanded the organiser give an explanation following their failure to deliver the concert as promised.

He also urged the organiser to refund the concert-goers.

"The organiser owes the public an explanation and an apology over the matter.

"It is unacceptable that the organiser had failed to fulfill his responsibility as a concert organiser.

"It is not only unfair to those who bought the tickets, but also affected Penang's reputation for concert tourism.

"The organiser needs to offer a refund to the concert-goers," he said in a statement.

Yeoh said he had asked the organiser to provide an official explanation over the cancellation as it hurt the state's image and prospects for future concerts in Penang.

Tao, who won Taiwan's prestigious Golden Melody awards for best album, producer and song before, is credited for popularising the R&B style in Chinese pop.

Fans would surely remember his musical diversity for tunes like Pu Tong Peng You (Normal Friends), Ai Hen Jian Dan (I Love You), Zhao Zi Ji (Rain), Hei Se Liu Ding (Black Tangerine) and Xiao Zhen Gu Niang (Small Town Girl).

Shin is the former lead singer of the band Shin and a Golden Melody Awards nominee for Best Mandarin Male Singer.

He is well-known for his numbers 'One Night in Beijing' and 'Si Le Dou Yao Ai' (Still Love Even After Death).
