KUALA LUMPUR: An engineer has claimed trial at the Sessions Court to raping a woman in September, 2018.

S. Baskaran, 47, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read in front of judge Suraiya Mustafa Kamal on Thursday (Sept 19).

He was charged under Section 376 (1) of the Penal Code, which carries a jail sentence of up to 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.

Baskaran had allegedly raped a 25-year-old student at a room in a house along Jalan Limau Purut in Bangsar at about 3pm on Sept 13,2018.

Judge Suraiya fixed Oct 9 for case mention and document submissions.

Earlier, lawyer Kamarul Zaman Abdul Rahman, representing the accused, asked for the bail amount to be set at a minimum, arguing that Baskaran has to provide for his 74-year-old father with his RM3,000 monthly salary.

Kamarul added that the accused also posed no flight risk.

Deputy public prosecutor Nur Farah Adilah Noordin however asked for bail not to be granted to the accused.

“However if the court were to grant bail, we ask for additional conditions to be set, which is that the accused should report to the nearest police station and forbidden from approaching the victim until the case is over, ” said Nur Farah.

The court set RM8,000 as bail with one surety and ordered the accused to report to the nearest police station once a month and forbade him from contacting the victim.
