KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he had already informed Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad of the move to contest in the Port Dickson parliamentary constituency.

Anwar said the decision, which forms part of the process to facilitate his return to Parliament and later, his transition to the role of the country’s eighth prime minister, was relayed to Dr Mahathir via a telephone conversation.

The PKR president-elect, however, said he also voiced his full support for Dr Mahathir in helming the country.

“I told him that we will continue to offer our full support to Tun (Dr) Mahathir in leading the country,” he was quoted as saying by Astro AWANI, on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Anwar said he was also touched by the stand adopted by Port Dickson member of parliament, Datuk Daniyal Balagopal Abdullah.

“I am drawn to Teluk Kemang (now known as Port Dickson following the redelineation of electoral borders) and was also touched by Daniyal’s personality.

“He did not talk about giving way. Instead, he spoke about working together to form a solid team,” he said.

Anwar last contested an election in the 13th general election, where he defeated Mazlan Ismail (BN) and Abdullah Zawawi Samsudin (independent) in Permatang Pauh.

He was stripped of his eligibility as Permatang Pauh member of parliament when the Federal Court upheld his five-year jail term after it rejected his appeal over his sodomy conviction on Feb 2015.

Anwar was granted immediate release after obtaining a royal pardon from Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V on May 16, seven days after Pakatan Harapan formed the new government.
