SUNGAI PETANI: A total of 14 people have been arrested for their suspected involvement in a brawl which occurred during the PKR elections at the party’s Merbok branch at The Carnival, yesterday.
Kuala Muda district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Adzli Abu Shah said, 10 men were arrested after police reviewed CCTV recordings and studied statements from four people who were initially arrested.
He said the men, aged in their 20s to 50s, were believed to have gotten involved in a brawl due to their displeasure with the problems with the voting system.
“Some were arrested last night and others came to the police station to lodge a report before they were detained to facilitate investigation.
“We will be investigating the case from all angles. We want to ensure that such cases do not happen again,” he said.
Adzli said 13 people will be remanded. The other suspect, in his 50s, was freed on police bail due to ill health.
“The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting,” he said.
Yesterday, NSTP reported that police had arrested four people who were involved in a brawl during the PKR party elections at the Merbok branch.
The four, aged between 21 and 59, were said to have used items such as brooms and pipes as weapons. A video of the brawl made its way onto social media and subsequently went viral.
