PETALING JAYA: Lawyer Azhar Harun, better known as Art Harun, has been appointed as chairman of the Election Commission (EC).

In a statement today, Chief Secretary to the Government Ismail Bakar said the appointment was approved by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“I am confident that given his experience and qualifications, he will carry out his duties and responsibilities as EC chairman according to the Federal Constitution,” he said.



Azhar replaces Mohd Hashim Abdullah, whose tenure as chairman was shortened to July 1. It was initially supposed to end in August 2020.
