PETALING JAYA: Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has taken to Twitter to vent his frustration over Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed quitting the party.

"I have been vocal in cautioning my party against this alliance with PAS and I bore the brunt of attacks from within.

"Now, we have lost a leading light of our party. A brilliant and good man. This is on you, Mr President (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi)," the Rembau MP tweeted on Tuesday (Sept 18).

Khairy's tweet alluded to Mustapa's departure from Umno after being a party member for more than four decades.

He also said that there was hardly any convincing efforts to start rejuvenating the party.

Mustapa added that to be relevant in the nation's political scenario today, Umno as the backbone of Barisan Nasional, cannot depend on the sole support of the Malays and Bumiputras.

He had said that his political principle was that Umno should be an inclusive, moderate and a party that takes the middle path.

Following Barisan's disastrous performance in GE14, leaders from Umno had toyed around the idea of cooperating with PAS.

Political pundits previously warned that grassroots members may feel uneasy about the unlikely alliance, given that the two parties were arch enemies for decades.

However, on Saturday (Sept 15), Umno leaders, including Dr Ahmad Zahid attended the opening of the PAS general assembly.

Dr Ahmad Zahid said the relationship between Umno and PAS was a formal political collaboration of opposition parties.

Also present were MIC leaders, led by its deputy president Datuk Seri S.K. Devamany, who confirmed their wish to be allied with PAS.

In his keynote address, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said the party, under the Islamic concept of tahalluf (cooperation), was willing to be friendly with political opponents for the greater good.

On Sunday (Sept 16), the 64th PAS muktamar unanimously adopted a motion that gave the mandate to the PAS syura council and party leadership to decide on any political alliances.
