KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Dr Muhammad Shafee Abdullah says that he has a diplomatic passport because he was once an ambassador-at-large (one who is not assigned to a specific country).

He said that the travel document is still valid but he received a letter from Wisma Putra last month that he should not be using it any more as he was no longer one.

In 2016, the government appointed Dr Muhammad Shafee as ambassador-at-large for human rights for a term of two years until 2018.

"Before being appointed, I was also holding the rank of an ambassador ranked Jusa A as the Malaysian representative to the Asean Inter-governmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).

"I was the first for Malaysia. Now (that post is held by) Edmund Bon," he said.

Dr Muhammad Shafee was arrested by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Aiport in Subang on Thursday (Sept 13) morning.

He was later taken to the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex and was charged with four charges under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001 involving RM4.3mil and RM5.2mil received from former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The Sessions Court allowed Dr Muhammad Shafee RM1mil bail and also ordered him to surrender both his Malaysian and diplomatic passports.
