KLANG: Hardline Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam is the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Sungai Kandis state by-election in Selangor, the party announced today.

Lokman, a former director of the Special Affairs Department (Jasa) under former prime minister Najib Razak, will be challenged by PKR’s Zawawi Ahmad Mughni.

Lokman will be standing under the BN banner, despite earlier speculation that Umno could go to the by-election using its own party logo for the first time.

Lokman has been behind several anti-government protests since BN’s defeat in the recent general election, leading a group called “Pemantau Malaysia Baru”.

The Sungai Kandis state seat became vacant following the death of PKR assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei.

Shuhaimi, a former political secretary of ex-Selangor menteri besar Mohamed Azmin Ali, died of lymphoma on July 2.

Nomination will be held tomorrow while polling is on Aug 4.
