Who are you? Photos of Sarawak Spiderman paying zakat goes viral

NST

KUCHING: What are the odds of seeing your favourite superhero paying his zakat fitrah (tithe) at a shopping complex?
Your chances will be higher of course, if you were at the Majma’ Mall here last Saturday.
Spiderman has definitely gained instant here while he was fulfilling his religious obligation at the shopping mall in the Sarawak Islamic Complex.
Photos of Harris Fazri Hashim garb in the web-slinging superhero suit, has been shared widely on several Facebook groups, drawing hundreds of humorous responses from Netizens.
“Even Spiderman did not forget to pay his tithe,” said the caption of the picture, which have received more than 3,000 likes since it was posted on GAGS Malaysia Facebook page on Monday.
Most social media users commended the picture, which they said is a gentle reminder for their Muslim friends to perform their religious obligation.
There were also some who also noticed similarities between Harris and British-American actor, Andrew Garfield, who had appeared twice as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-man and The Amazing Spider-man 2.
Harris told the New Straits Times that his friends and him are cosplay enthusiasts, and on that particular day, they were appeared for a Hari Raya children’s costume competition at the mall.
“Earlier in the day, my wife kept reminding me to pay the zakat fitrah since it has been more than a week we have observed the fasting month.
“As I was about to leave the mall, I saw a makeshift counter accepting tithe payment and immediately went there to fulfil my obligation,” said the 40-year-old civil servant, who admitted that he is a late bloomer in the cosplay world.
The father of a one-year-old son said he asked the permission of the amil (tithe collector) if it was okay for him to pay his tithe in his superhero suit.
“The amil was very friendly and did not show any sigh of awkwardness. My session of paying the tithe went smoothly,” he said.
He added his involvement in cosplay was not only about realising his childhood dreams but also to spread cheer among children.
“Sometimes we do get invited to appear at hospitals to bring cheer to children including those who are suffering from terminal illnesses. It feels good that your hobby in some way gives a ray of hope to children facing difficult times,” he said.
