Astro ordered to review Turkish series following complaints by Muslim viewers
PUTRAJAYA: The Film Censorship Board has instructed Measat Broadcast Network Systems Sdn Bhd (Astro) to review the content of Turkish television series 'The Magnificent Century', which currently airs on Astro Maya HD and Astro Prima.
The Home Ministry said the move follows complaints by members of the Muslim community that the drama series contains scenes not suitable “within the Islamic context.”
"The board takes note of various complaints over the drama series, which tells the story of Sultan Sulaiman, the ruler of Uthmaniyah in the 16th century.
"Based on the complaints, the board held a meeting with Astro and the Islamic Development Department on May 29 to discuss the matter, and we ordered Astro to conduct a review," the ministry said in a statement today.
Astro had recently come under fire from netizens over the screening of the series, which has been deemed insulting to Islam.
Netizens have characterised Astro as insensitive, as the series is said to contain pornographic and alcohol-drinking scenes.
