Immigration officers and contractor nabbed over bribes totalling RM27mil

 
ALOR SETAR: Two Immigration officers and a contractor have been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged involvement in bribery cases amounting to RM27mil linked to skilled foreign worker applications.
The offences were allegedly committed in Padang Besar, Perlis, from 2015 to the date of their arrest.
The three suspects were arrested on Monday and brought to court here on Tuesday morning for a remand order.
According to a source, the suspects were picked up separately in Padang Besar, Perlis; at Jalan Langgar here; and in the area of the Kedah Education Department here between 10am and 11am.
They are an Immigration enforcement officer from the expatriate section, aged 35; an Immigration expatriate section chief, 37; and a contractor, 48.
They were later taken to the Kedah MACC office to assist in investigations of bribery (soliciting and receiving) cases involving 18,000 applications for skilled workers at the Unit Permohonan Dagang (Expatriate Application Unit), Padang Besar Immigration Department, from 2015 until Monday.
They allegedly solicited and received bribes of RM1,500 per application, which added up to RM27mil.
They were remanded for seven days until May 15 to help investigations under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
Kedah MACC director Mohd Fauzi Mohamad confirmed the arrests and is expected to provide more details at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
