MACC seizes RM1.5mil cash in Immigration case

 
ALOR SETAR: The Kedah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized a total of RM1.5mil in cash in connection with the alleged corruption practices of an immigration officer involving more than RM27.9mil.
Kedah MACC director Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohamad said the cash was seized from a Datuk's house in Penang during a raid called "Op Lavish" at 6.30pm Wednesday.
The 53-year-old Datuk was arrested on Tuesday at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 11pm.
Mohd Fauzi said the team had also frozen a fixed deposit account of a suspect worth RM1.5mil.
"As of now, the total amount seized is RM6.57mil. We also believe that there are more money hidden and given to proxies to be kept.
"We are in the midst of recovering all the money," he said.
On Tuesday, a 37-year-old contractor was detained at about 9.30pm in Petaling Jaya over the case.
The MACC also obtained a seven-day remand order until May 16 for the duo to assist in investigations.
On Monday, MACC detained a 37-year-old grade KP42 immigration officer, holding a senior post, who was transferred to the Padang Besar Immigration Department in Perlis from Putrajaya early last year.
He was said to be in possession of five luxury cars, including a BMW X6, BMW 320i and a Toyota Vellfire, a BMW R1200 superbike, 13 luxury wristwatches and 13 branded handbags.
A check also found that he had a fixed deposit account of about RM1mil.
The total amount seized was estimated to be close to RM2.5mil.
The MACC also detained a 35-year-old enforcement officer working with the Padang Besar Customs and Immigration Quarantine complex and a 48-year-old contractor
