IGP: Police told to build stronger case against assistant warden for death of boy beaten by hose

KUALA LUMPUR: The religious school assistant warden who allegedly abused an 11-year-boy was released on a court bond as a stronger case needed to be built against him, says Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (pic).

The Inspector-General of Police said the suspect was released after the deputy public prosecutor reviewed the investigation papers.

"Evidence was lacking and the investigation papers were returned to us for improvement.

"The case is still being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder," he told reporters after closing the conference for police asset officers at the Police Academy here on Thursday.

The suspect was arrested on April 22 over the alleged abuse of Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gaddafi under Section 31(1) of the Child Protection Act 2001.

Police later classified the case as murder when the boy died on April 26.

The suspect is said to have whipped Mohamad Thaqif and several other students with a water hose as punishment.

The boy reportedly suffered from a bacterial infection following the beating and both his legs were amputated. He died several days after the operation.

The suspect, an ex-convict who served jail time for theft, has been working at the private school since last year.

At the Sessions Court on Wednesday, Judge Salawati Djambari allowed an application to release the 29-year-old with one surety under Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
