IGP Slams Jamal Yunos' May 13 Pledge, Says Police Will Take Actions
KUALA LUMPUR: A recent statement by Datuk Jamal Md Yunos, pledging that a repeat of the May 13 tragedy will occur if the Bersih 5 rally takes place in November, has not gone down well with the country's top cop.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar slammed the statement made by the leader of the Red Shirt faction as "seditious", and pledged zero tolerance.
"Such seditious statements cannot be tolerated.
Police will take strict action immediately," he said.
Khalid, via his Twitter account, had also shared a screenshot of the statement made by Jamal.
On September 21, Jamal, via a Facebook posting, had pledged that should the Bersih 5 rally take place as planned on Nov 19, trouble will follow.
Jamal implied that the racial clashes of May 13, 1969, would happen again and there would be cases of "parang terbang" on the day of the rally.
His Red Shirt faction had made headlines recently, following their stand-off with Bersih members.
The latest incident occurred yesterday in Sabak Bernam, Selangor when a Bersih supporter was assaulted by a group of Red Shirt supporters.
The act, captured on video, was roundly condemned by netizens.
It also drew criticism from Umno Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin, who had labeled it "irresponsible."
Khairy had also urged police to take appropriate action against the culprits.
