KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 ― Armed masked robbers pulled off a smash-and-grab gems heist today escaping with about RM500,000 from a popular jewellery outlet in Banting.

The robbers, one armed with a gun and the others with hammers, spent less than 10 minutes at the outlet located in a shopping mall, smashing display showcases and scooping various chains, bracelets, rings and pendants from 12 trays.

The 11.35am incident saw the masked robbers storming into the mall using a back entrance where the jeweller was located.

Kuala Langat police chief Supt Zailan Tasir said the staff were arranging the jewellery in the showcases when the robbers surprised them.

He said police were alerted five minutes after the incident took place.

Initial investigations revealed the suspects clad in ski masks, long sleeved shirts and pants as well as gloves.

“Closed circuit television camera (CCTV) footage showed that the suspects had parked a silver Naza Citra in the back lane between a building and supermarket. They alighted from the vehicle and entered the premises via the back entrance," he said.

Zailan added the outlet had discontinued security guard services two months ago.

He added that police will also check other CCTV footage outside the mall.

He said there would be police road blocks at roads leading out of town.
