Man runs amok, leaves two dead

BALING: A 32-year-old man ran amok and killed his paralysed brother and a relative with a piece of wood and a brick.
His mother eventually managed to calm him down and tied him to a jackfruit tree with a sarong before calling some villagers, who then handed him to the police.
The drama began yesterday morning at their house in Kampung Lanai here when the man bashed his brother Muhammad Azwan Wahab, 26, who was in bed while saying “you have given mother a hard time”.
His mother Che Piah Shafie, 66, was also at home then but he did not attack her.
Instead, he left the house and told his mother that he was going out to buy cigarettes.
She followed him to the sundry shop and when they were on their way home, a relative, Rokiah Abdullah, 54, walked over to him and tried to pacify him.
“But he bludgeoned her to death with a brick,” said Che Piah.
“I managed to calm him and tied him to a tree with a sarong before calling several villagers,” she said.
Che Piah said her son was a psychiatric patient and had been on medication for four years.
The man’s sister Zurina Wahab, 39, said she quickly took her five-month-old baby boy out of the house when the attack occurred.
“I heard him muttering ‘mu menyusahkan mak’ before hitting my younger brother with the stick.
“My brother has run amok a few times before but nobody got hurt. He would take his medicine and everything would be fine,” she said.
OCPD Supt Shariffuddin Yusof said the suspect told the police that he heard a voice asking him to kill someone.
“He was a patient at the Baling Hospital and Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani,” he said.
Police have recovered a bloodstained brick and a piece of wood from the scene.
