KUALA LUMPUR, July 5 ― Police are investigating the crowd disturbance that broke out yesterday after a vehicle allegedly hit a motorcyclist along the busy Jalan Masjid India.
According to Dang Wangi district police chief Asst Comm Zainol Samah, some in the crowd who witnessed the accident turned violent and proceeded to destroy the vehicle, even using weapons to smash its windows.
“We are still investigating the matter, we have not got full details yet. The road was jammed up yesterday, there was a lot of people there. It was very hard for cars to go through.
“After the accident, a lot of people went to wreck the car. The windows and all were badly damaged. We are looking into the matter,” he told Malay Mail Online when contacted.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 148 (possessing weapons or missiles at riot) and 427 (committing mischief) of the Penal Code.
Punishment for an offence under Section 148 is a maximum five-year jail term or fine or both.
Section 427 on the other hand prescribes a jail term of between one and five years, or a fine or both.
In the 6.30pm incident, it is believed that the riot started after the car hit the motorcycle and allegedly attempted to drive away.
Around 10 to 15 people then surrounded the vehicle and hit at it, some even jumping onto the hood of the car.
