KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A Malaysia Airlines flight from London to Kuala Lumpur experienced severe turbulence on Sunday, causing minor injuries to some passengers and crew, the airline said.
There was a "brief moment of severe turbulence" when flight MH1, with 378 people on board, flew over the Bay of Bengal, it said in a statement.
The flight landed safely in Kuala Lumpur, and a small number of affected passengers and crew were given immediate treatment, the statement said. It provided no further details and airline officials couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
A 13-year-old passenger, Harith Azman, posted photos on his Facebook page showing fallen food carts, items strewn in the aisle and a damaged hand rest on the Airbus A380 jumbo jet.
Harith told The Associated Press that his parents were both using the bathroom at the time and that his father hit his head on the ceiling, but did not require treatment.
Two minutes after the seat belt sign was turned on over the Bay of Bengal, the plane started shaking violently and then suddenly "dived down," Harith said. It was a "very, very chaotic moment" as people started screaming and a food trolley and other items seemed to be floating in the air, he said.
After 10 seconds, he said the plane was brought back under control. He said he didn't know how many people were injured.
Malaysia Airlines is still trying to recover from two disasters in 2014 — the disappearance of Flight 370 and the loss of another plane shot down over Ukraine.

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) passenger aircraft encountered severe turbulence today, which left several passengers and crew members injured. Flight MH1, an Airbus A380 aircraft en route to Kuala Lumpur from London, experienced clear-air turbulence over the Bay of Bengal. The aircraft was carrying 378 people. In a statement, Malaysia Airlines confirmed the incident. The airline said the incident occurred over the Bay of Bengal, and the passenger seatbelt light was switched on due to air turbulence. "Due to a brief moment of severe turbulence, some passengers suffered minor injuries," said the statement. It said medical crew and Malaysia Airlines senior management met the aircraft on arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). "A small number of affected passengers and crew have been treated by medical officers. "Malaysia Airlines has assisted the 378 passengers and crew onboard MH1 and sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by this weather event which was entirely beyond our control." Meanwhile, images being shared on social media show a Malaysia Airlines aircraft galley in disarray with heavy food carts strewn across the floor, presumably as a result of the heavy turbulence. Other images also show damage to some passenger overhead units, which appear to be cracked. The passenger cabin is also seen to be in chaos, with debris strewn across the aisle.
