Bogus navy man nabbed with fake guns – again

MALACCA: An early morning high-speed chase on the North-South Expressway led to the arrest of a man in full Royal Malaysian Navy fatigue and the recovery of a frightening array of weapons, including machine guns, shotguns, a grenade launcher and a whole lot of ammunition.

The only thing is: the man is actually a 41-year-old salesman from Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur and the firearms were all fake.

And he has done it before. In 2012, the man was arrested with a cache of weapons after posing as a military personnel and trying to enter Terendak Camp in Masjid Tanah.

He was charged and jailed for six months.

Obviously, he did not learn his lesson. Traffic policemen from Bukit Aman first sighted the white van speeding along the expressway and the vehicle was flagged down at about 3.45am yesterday .

However, the salesman refused to stop and police chased him for about 2km before he was finally stopped.

He then identified himself as a high-ranking Naval officer.

The policemen did not buy his story and radioed for reinforcements.

When a team from Alor Gajah arrived, they were surprised to find the cache of weapons including machine guns and grenades.

The weapons were all imitation and were ordered online from Hong Kong.

The salesman admitted he bought the uniform from a store in Masjid India, Kuala Lumpur and even had his authority card printed there.

Malacca police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Ramli Din said his team would check where he obtained the naval uniform and authority card.

“We want to find out if there is a syndicate dealing with military and police uniforms,” he said.

Earlier, Alor Gajah OCPD Supt A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz said police had recovered three shotguns, two imitation guns, a grenade launcher, magazines, bullets, bullet-proof jacket with the Navy’s emblem and a walkie-talkie.

“The man claimed the weapons were his own collection but we are still investigating how he obtained them,” he told a press conference at Alor Gajah police headquarters, yesterday.

Supt Asmadi said the salesman was travelling from Johor Baru to Kuala Lumpur when he was stopped.
