RNC Chairman: Trump is our nominee
Donald Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee and it is time for the party to rally around him, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus declared on Twitter Tuesday night.
He sent the tweet just minutes after Sen. Ted Cruz finished his speech announcing he was leaving the race — a speech in which Cruz called for unity, but did not mention Trump’s name.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) ended his run for the presidency on Tuesday night, after losing the Indiana Republican primary.
Despite billing himself as the candidate who could unite the Republican Party, Cruz failed to generate widespread support at the polls against front-runner Donald Trump. Counting his victory in Indiana on Tuesday, the real estate magnate has won six consecutive GOP primaries.
The senator from Texas had been seen as the Republican party's only viable alternative to Mr Trump.
"We left it all in the field in Indiana, and the voters chose another path," he told supporters in Indiana.
"With a heavy heart, but with boundless optimism for the long term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign."
