Netizens urged to stop spreading false info about student

GEORGE TOWN: The sister of a 21-year-old college student who fell to her death here pleaded with the public to stop sharing pictures and false information about the incident.
She made the plea on Facebook postings following the circulation of pictures and news on social media of P. Darshwini.
The victim had fallen from the 16th floor of an apartment block in Island Park on Thursday.
P. Thirptisonia urged netizens to stop spreading false news about her sister.
She wrote: “Please stop spreading rumours about my sister’s death. No sister wants to see her sister’s death pictures going here & there. Please stop it! Thank you.”
Gruesome photographs of the incident were widely circulated on social media such as WhatsApp.
Also shared was a video of a person falling from the roof of a high-rise which Thirptisonia said “had nothing to do with my sister”.
Another post was by a person claiming to be Darshwini’s boyfriend of more than four years.
He said the social media postings had added to his grief.
“Please stop spreading false stories and rumours about her. Instead please pray for her soul to rest in peace. That’s the least you guys can do for that pretty angel of mine.”
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said the video had nothing to do with any case in the state.
“It was an incident in China and the victim was a man.
“Investigations showed Darshwini fell from an apartment and not from the rooftop,” he said.
ACP Mior said Darshwini’s death was a sudden death case but was thrust into the limelight when people started circulating false information on social media.
“We are investigating whether she was suffering from depression or other reasons,” he said yesterday.
