Lee Chong Wei beating the Chinese Armada of Lin Dan and Chen Long At Asian Badminton Championships gives hope to Olympic's dream

Chong Wei back as Asia's top dog after ABC win

THE STAR

PETALING JAYA: Lee Chong Wei reigns supreme in Asia again.
The 33-year-old reclaimed the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) singles crown he last won in 2006 with a convincing 21-17, 15-21, 21-13 victory over China’s world No. 1 Chen Long in Wuhan on Sunday.
The triumph in the 82-minute thriller was the world No. 2 third title of the season – having captured the Malaysian Masters in January and Malaysian Open three weeks ago. It was also Chong Wei’s 63rd career title overall.
Chong Wei’s victories against his two biggest rivals – including five-time world champion Lin Dan whom he defeated in the semi-finals on Saturday – was not only a major feat but a timely statement well ahead of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in August.
It’s worth noting that two-time Olympic silver medallist Chong Wei has not lost to both Chen Long (four times) or Lin Dan (two times) in the past six months.
Chong Wei also defeated the duo in their own backyard en route to winning the China Open last November.
“It’s never easy to win (titles) in China and having beaten Lin Dan and Chen Long is definitely special,” said Chong Wei, who pocketed US$15,000 (RM58,700) for his effort.
“Winning the today has certainly boosted my confidence as I prepare for the Thomas Cup (in Kunshan, China from May 15-22) and also the Olympics which is my goal for the year.
“My condition is pretty good right now and I’m keeping myself focused on the two major tournaments.”
Chong Wei will return to join the Thomas Cup squad for a one-week centralised training at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara starting Tuesday.
And Chen Long must have been tired of the bridesmaid’s tag by now.
The two-time world champion has endured a frustrating run since his previous last title at the Denmark Open last October.
The 27-year-old also finished as runner-up to Lin Dan at the China Masters last week.
