MALACCA: The state government will enforce the National Fatwa Council’s edict against vaping, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron.
Idris said the state government has decided to adhere to the National Fatwa Council's decision to ban vaping, following reports made by the council recently.
"We have received reports from the National Fatwa Committee in regards to the edict issued by the National Fatwa Council (to ban vapes) and the Malacca Islamic Religious Council (Maim) has accepted the decision," he told reporters after visiting primary students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Udang here, today.
Idris however added that the enforcement date to prohibit vaping would only be determined after the state finalised the number of vape traders in the state.
"I will discuss the matter in the state executive council meeting this Wednesday and I have directed the State Housing, Local Government and Environment committee to furnish me with details on the number of vape traders affected.
"Then only we will fix the enforcement date."
Last December, the Malacca Historical City Council issued business licenses to some 20 vape traders, after the state government announced that they will not ban vaping.
Idris had earlier allowed vaping in the state as a study showed that the sales and the use of such merchandise was not widespread in Malacca city.
On the fate of vape traders in the state, Idris said the state government will continue to provide them with other opportunities to generate income.
"We will think of other alternatives for the vape traders to venture into businesses other than vapes."
