Three nabbed over extort bid with sex videos

KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested three men for extortion after a woman lodged a report claiming that she had been threatened to fork out RM1,500 or a personal video of her and her boyfriend would be spread via the social media.

City police chief, ACP M Chandra said the police report was made on August 6 by the woman, a bank teller aged 24. “She reported being extorted by a man who threatened to spread a personal video of her and her boyfriend if she did not give him RM1,500,” Chandra said.

Acting on the information, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) arrested two men at a fast food restaurant in Api-Api Centre on August 8 at about 1am.

“The first suspect, 46, works as a technician and has no previous criminal records. He was however, tested positive for drugs.

“The second suspect, 31, also works as a technician and has a past record under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1951. He was also tested positive for drugs,” he added.

Another arrest was made on the same day at about 3am at a bus stop in Taman Hilltop, Luyang. “The third suspect, 38, also works as a technician and has a criminal record under Section 411 of the Penal Code. He was also tested positive for drugs,” he said.

Police then confiscated four handphones, a laptop, a personal computer, a telescope and a car bringing the total value of seized items toRM25,000.

“We believe that the suspects broke into the victim’s home in Cyber City on June 24 and stole handphones and a laptop belonging to the victim.

“A personal video of the victim and her boyfriend is stored in the laptop.

“The suspects then used this video as a means of extorting RM1,500 from the victim,” Chandra said, adding that the suspects obtained the victim’s phone number from her laptop.

The case will be investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine, or both.

“They will also be investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and if convicted, can be fined not more than RM5,000 or jailed not more than five years,” he said.

Chandra advised the public not to record any personal or sexual pictures or videos and then store them in any device.

He urged them to make a police report if a third party was threatening them with spreading their personal sex pictures or videos.

Earlier, Chandra officiated the City Police Hari Raya Open House at the Karamunsing police headquarters.
