PETALING JAYA: The late Datuk Sharifah Aini's mother Sharifah Noor Syed Ahmad(pic) is devastated over the loss of her daughter, saying that "it should have been me."
In an interview with Malay entertainment portal Murai, Sharifah Noor said she had more illnesses than her 61-year-old daughter. 
Sharifah Noor said she went home early after she believed her daughter showed signs of recovery.
"In fact before I left for home, I told her: 'I love you Aini', and she nodded her head.
"I thought her nod meant that she was okay.
“But it was in fact the opposite.
“I rushed back to the hospital to see her, but by the time I reached there she was already gone," said Sharifah Noor on Saturday.
"Maybe she nodded because she didn't want to make things difficult for me. It's so sad, very sad indeed," she said.
Sharifah Aini who turned 61 last Wednesday, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Damansara Specialist Hospital on Tuesday for breathing difficulties and breathed her last at 1.26am on Saturday.
Sharifah, fondly known as Kak Pah, began her career as a singer after winning the RTS (Radio Television Singapore) Talentime Contest through her song 'Tiga Malam' in 1968 at the age of 15.
Two years later at the age of 17, Sharifah Aini had her first album "Seri Dewi Malam" and this was followed by the album "Kekasih Pujaan" also in the same year.
The star who began singing at the age of seven and had produced albums after albums continuously in both Bahasa Malaysia and English.
She produced a total of 93 albums, seven of which were English albums, with the last produced in 2006 which was a compilation album entitled "Timeless".
Besides singing, Sharifah Aini began to be involved in acting at the age of 23 with her first film 'Hapuslah Airmatamu' together with famous Indonesian singer, the late Broery Marantika, in 1976, and two years later appeared in the film 'Sumber Ilhamku', 'Bintang Pujaan' (1981), 'Diva Popular' (2006) and 'Penanggal' (2012).
The legendary singer was also accorded the title 'National Songstress' in 2006, which is the highest national award for a female singer in recognition of her contributions to the music industry, people and nation.

Biduanita negara, Datuk Sharifah Aini atau lebih mesra dengan panggilan Kak Pah, meninggal dunia awal pagi tadi di Pusat Perubatan Pakar Damansara.
Allahyarham yang berusia 61 tahun menghembuskan nafas terakhirnya pada pukul 1.26 akibat jangkitan paru-paru, lapor Astro Awani.
Allahyarham dimasukkan ke unit rawatan rapi di Pusat Perubatan Pakar Damansara pada Selasa.
Biduanita itu dikesan menghidap fibrosis paru-paru dua tahun lalu.
Menurut laman tersebut, Kak Pah dimasukkan ke hospital oleh anaknya, Aliff Omar susulan kesukaran bernafas awal pagi Isnin.
Sharifah Aini merupakan anak pasangan Syed Jaafar Syed Sahil dan Sharifah Noor Syed Ahmad Al-Attas yang dilahirkan di Nee Soon, Singapura pada 2 Julai 1953.
Namun sejak usia lapan bulan lagi, Kak Pah mula dijaga serta dibesarkan oleh neneknya, Tengku Wan Mariam Tengku Wan Tahir serta datuknya, Syed Sahil Syed Ali Al-Jufry, di Majidee, Johor Bahru.
Datuknya seorang pemandu teksi dan kehidupan mereka sekeluarga bukanlah senang.
Kak Pah sewaktu kecil pernah mengambil upah menggiling cili dan menjual buah nangka serta kuih.
Titik tolak Kak Pah menjadi artis bermula selepas menjuarai pertandingan Bintang RTS 1968 di Singapura dengan lagu Tiga Malam.
Beliau kemudian disunting menjadi artis rakaman EMI dan terus bertahan dengan label itu selama 38 tahun.
Hasilnya, nama Kak Pah terukir dalam The Malaysia Book of Records sebagai penyanyi paling lama dengan sesebuah syarikat rakaman dan memiliki 135 album.
Kak Pah menerima gelaran Biduanita Negara pada tahun 2006. – 5 Julai, 2014.
