BUKIT JALIL: A four-year wait for the men's doubles Super Series title finally came to an end when Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem pulled off a sensational win in the final of the Maybank Malaysian Open at Putra Stadium.
The duo, cheered on by a vociferous home crowd, defeated China's Chai Biao-Hong Wei 21-19, 21-18 in a pulsating 45-minute final on Sunday.
It was a neck-to-neck battle in the opening game but a pumped up Khim Wah-V Shem pulled away with some excellent moves for a 21-19 win.
They lost some of their touches in the second game and allowed the Chinese to accelerate for a 10-4 lead before fighting back valiantly to nail the title.
Malaysia last tasted success in a Super Series doubles event at the 2010 Malaysian Open, which was won by their seniors Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong.
V Shem and Khim Wah were over the moon.
"Malaysia are hosting the Super Series Premier for the first time and we have won it," said V Shem.
"It has been a long wait for us ..finally we got our acts right to win our first major title. The home support played a big part in our victory today," added Khim Wah.
