Two security guards convicted of stealing from jewellery stores

KUALA LUMPUR: Two security guards were convicted in cases related to the theft of RM150,000 worth of gold necklaces at a jewellery store in Setapak last month.
Philippine-national Rakib Asla, 27, pleaded guilty in the Session Court here to robbing a Tomei Gold and Jewellery store of 93 gold necklaces worth a total of RM150,000 by threatening staff L. Robert, 52, with an Arminius .38 revolver.
The diminutive man, dressed in an orange jump suit was accused of committing the crime at the jewellery store in KL Festival City mall, on Jalan Taman Ibu Kota, Taman Danau Kota, Setapak at around 9.30am Oct 31.
The offence under Section 4 of the Firearms Act (Increased Penalty) 1971 is punishable by life imprisonment and no less than six strokes of the cane.
It was learnt that Rakib entered the country through Sabah using a fake MyKad.
He obtained a job with a private security firm in July and started working as a guard in the jewellery store in Setapak on Oct 9, just 22 days before the robbery.
Judge Azman Mustapha fixed Nov 19 for sentencing.
Meanwhile, fellow Philippine-national Hussin Jalain, 29, pleaded guilty in a magistrate court to knowingly possessing two golden necklaces stolen from the Tomei Gold jewellery shop, worth RM3,000.
He admitted to a second charge of not possessing valid legal documents, an offence under Immigration Act 1959/63.
The offences occurred at at KFC restaurant in the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT), Sepang, where he was arrested on Nov 3.
Magistrate Erry Shahriman Nor Aripin fixed Nov 20 to decide Hussin's punishment.
Hussin faces up to five years in prison, a fine or both, for each offence; under the Immigration Act and Section 411 of the Penal Code for possession of stolen goods.
Both men were unrepresented while DPP Norman Mohd Nasir prosecuted in Rakib's case, while DPP Shashita Mohamed Hanifa acted in Hussin's case.
