Pakistani cloth trader nabbed with 24kg of drugs

KUALA LUMPUR: A Pakistani man was arrested with 24.9kg of methamphetamine worth nearly RM3.7mil hidden behind beads stitched on pieces of cloth on Thursday.
The 43-year-old man is believed to have brought the drugs into Malaysia by concealing them into pieces of cloth for Punjabi suits which had beaded stitching.
City police deputy chief Deputy Comm Datuk Amar Singh said the suspect was arrested with 47 pieces of cloth that contained 500gm of methamphetamine each at a condominium in Sri Petaling in a raid at 4.25pm.
“We believe this modus operandi is different from what we have seen before. The suspect has been entering the country with his wife and five-year-old son as a cloth trader. We believe that he has been using the business and his family as a cover to smuggle in drugs,” he told reporters yesterday.
He said the suspect, who also tested positive for methamphetamine, entered Malaysia on eight separate occasions this year alone and has been remanded until Nov 24.
Meanwhile, police also arrested a 26-year-old man at a hotel in Sri Petaling on Nov 11 in connection with the seizure of 2kg of methamphetamine worth nearly RM300,000.
The drugs were found hidden in a cooking pot that was placed under the seat of a Perodua Kancil.
