KUALA LUMPUR: The public does not need to wait up to 24 hours to report cases of missing family members or acquaintances, said Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.
According to him, the allegation of having to wait up to 24 hours after the loss is a myth that is often spread by many parties without any basis.
"There is no stipulation or law that forces you to be patient, calm or endure for a long period of time.
"Some say you have to wait up to 24 hours, 48 hours to 72 hours in a nervous and thunderous state. This is just a myth," he told Sinar Harian on Thursday.
He said, if you have searched for a missing person and tried to contact them but failed, you can immediately go to the police station.
He said, this is an initial step to prevent a bad incident from happening to an individual who is reported missing.
In the meantime, he also advised that the community continue to play a role in helping to channel information about missing persons cases.
"The community's role is greatly appreciated in helping the police.
"Channels on various mediums we publicize related to the case of missing persons for the public to help with the investigation of the case," he said.
Recently, a question went viral from netizens regarding the standard operating procedure (SOP) regarding police reports that need to be made in relation to missing person cases.
