Anwar's visit strengthens Malaysia-Qatar bilateral relations, explores new investment opportunities
DOHA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to the Qatari capital today is expected to intensify bilateral relations between Malaysia and Qatar, which is now entering its 50th anniversary, in addition to exploring new investment opportunities between the two.
The visit was to fulfill the invitation of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in addition to attending the Qatar Economic Forum 2024.
Malaysian Ambassador to Qatar Zamshari Shaharan described the Prime Minister's maiden visit as a good start for both countries, not only strengthening good relations for 50 years but also exploring new cooperation for the next 50 years.
"Malaysia is highly regarded by Qatar as one of the progressive and modern Islamic countries that have achieved impressive economic success over the years," he told reporters during a press conference in conjunction with the Prime Minister's official visit at the Malaysian Embassy here, on Saturday.
He said the presence of Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, at the economic forum was seen as significant considering that Malaysia was also given a stage through the 'In Coversation with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim' session for 30 minutes to interact with forum participants including industry participants in Qatar as well as government delegations.
"In addition, Anwar's presence at the round table meeting with 30 representatives of Qatari companies will give him the opportunity to explain the state of the country's economy and the form of incentives or initiatives that we can offer if investing in Malaysia.
"Qatar is also interested in attracting inward investment by entering into joint ventures with Malaysian companies and establishing themselves in Qatar, in line with the vision of the Qatari government," he said.
Zamshari said among the potential sectors in Qatar is renewable energy.
Last year, the total bilateral trade between Malaysia and Qatar reached RM4.3 billion and the flow is expected to increase following this official visit.
