KAJANG: A 13-year-old boy pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court here on Friday to a charge of burning a kitten in an apartment last week.
The teenager, who had never attended school, made the confession after the charge was read before the Magistrate, Nik Siti Norazlini Nik Mohamed Faiz.
However, the court set June 27 as the date for re-mentioning the case for a moral report before sentencing.
According to the charges, the juvenile offender is accused along with two other men who are still at large, of cruelly causing pain to a cat by burning the animal.
The offense was allegedly committed at an apartment parking lot in Hulu Langat, at 1.08pm, on April 22.
The offense is committed in accordance with Paragraph 29(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code which carries a fine of between RM20,000 and RM100,000, or imprisonment for not more than three years or both, if convicted.
During the proceedings, Nurul Afiqah Abdul Ghaffar suggested that the accused be granted bail of RM10,000 with one surety.
"This case is very serious because it involves the offense of mistreatment of animals and it also involves a case of public interest," he said.
However, the mother of the teenager, who is 30 years old, pleaded for her only child to be granted bail at a low rate because he only worked in a factory.
The single mother said she would have to take care of her elderly and incapacitated mother if the bail was set too high.
After hearing applications from both parties, the court allowed the accused to be bailed at RM1,000 with one surety.
At the end of last month, a video recording related to the incident went viral showing three men hanging out at the flat's motorcycle parking lot.
Two of them then sprinkled what is believed to be fuel on the kitten, estimated to be six weeks old, before one of them lit the fire.
The Selangor Veterinary Services Department (DVS) also confirmed receiving a report from the Hulu Langat District Police Headquarters (IPD) on April 24 regarding the case
